On 31 March 2010 Research In Motion (RIM) announced its fiscal 4Q10 earnings for the three months ending 27 February in a call chaired by RIM's co-CEO Jim Balsillie. Despite a sequential increase in gross margin and a 65 percent increase in net subscriber additions of 4.9 million, shares fell 5 percent in late trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Shipments of 10.5 million units were short of the range forecast in December 2009, with RIM citing changes in customer inventory policy as the primary cause.

However, Mr Balsillie presented a bullish outlook, underlining the strength of RIM's forthcoming product portfolio. Responding to questions and answers from financial analysts, Balsillie raised expectations ahead of the company's Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) event, stating: "We have WES in late April. You are going to see a lot there on all aspects of the BlackBerry experience."
