New advertising funded MVNO prepares for launch in the UK


Blyk, a pan-European free mobile operator targeting the 16 to 24 year old youth market, has announced a series of deals as it prepares its first European launch in the UK market in mid-2007.
The announced deals include:

  • An agreement with Nokia Siemens Networks to host Blyk’s core network components including soft-switching
  • An MVNO agreement with the Orange network in the UK which will allow Blyk subscribers to make calls, send text messages and access data services via the Orange network
  • Advertising deals with Buena Vista, Coca-Cola, I-play mobile gaming, L’Oreal Paris, StepStone (a recruitment company) and

The company was founded by Pekka Ala Pietilä (the former President of Nokia) and Antti Ohrling (formally chairman and CEO of international advertising agency, Contra Group) in January 2006. The team includes several employees who previously worked with Ala Pietilä during his time at Nokia as well as experts from the music and advertising sectors.
