Blyk, an advertising funded mobile network targeting 16-24 year olds, launches in UK

After months of speculation a new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has launched in the UK. The SIM-only service, which will be operated using the brand name “Blyk” is an invitation only proposition targeted at 16 to 24 year olds.

Blyk was founded by Pekka Ala Pietilä (the former President of Nokia) and Antti Ohrling (formally chairman and CEO of international advertising agency, Contra Group) in January 2006. The team includes several employees who previously worked with Ala Pietilä during his time at Nokia as well as experts from the music and advertising sectors.

The service was launched to coincide with UK university students either starting or returning to their studies as the new academic year commences.
