Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the company's iPad tablet computer at an exclusive media event in San Francisco on 27 January 2010. The device was widely expected and subject to much hype and speculation.
The iPad features a 9.7-inch capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels. The device measures 24cm by 19cm and 1.3cm thick. It will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, with and without 3G connectivity. All versions have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, digital compass, built in microphone and speakers and a battery life of up to 10 hours. Models with 3G cellular radios will also sport assisted GPS. Prices start at $499 for the basic 16GB model and rise to $829 for a 64GB variant with 3G.
Mr Jobs also announced iBooks, an app and store for electronic books. Titles from five publishers will be available in ePub format.
