On 28 July 2011, LightSquared and Sprint announced a 15-year agreement for spectrum hosting, network services and roaming. LightSquared intends to operate as a wholesaler of LTE access in the US. The company owns 59 MHz of spectrum in the 1.5 GHz L-Band.
LightSquared indicated that it expects the agreement to result in $13 billion in capital and operating expense savings over the next eight years that would otherwise be required to build a brand-new network. The company also expects the agreement will see its network deployed a year ahead of its Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandate to cover 260 million points of presence (potential subscribers) by 2015.
