Vodafone has launched its upgraded version of 3G in the UK – known as HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access). It is targeting businesses with this technology which can be accessed using a PC card slotted into a notebook computer.
The service offers a downlink speed of up to 1.8 megabits per second compared with 384 kilobits per second (0.4 megabits per second) on current 3G cards. It also offers a small increase in uplink speed although customers are unlikely to notice a significant difference until a further evolution of the technology called HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) is launched in 2007 or 2008.
Customers will need to buy a new Vodafone branded PC card (manufactured by Huawei or Option) to take advantage of this service.
The most popular tariff is likely to be the £45 month rate with at least 1 Gigabyte (GB) of access per month (reasonable usage conditions apply over 1GB).
