Uncertainty around mobile TV increases as BT and Crown Castle terminate services

Following a review of its wholesale solutions BT has decided to terminate its DAB-IP mobile TV service known as Movio. BT has cancelled its contract with spectrum provider GCap and is in discussion with its existing wholesale customer, Virgin Mobile, regarding timelines for the closure of the service. It is expected that existing subscribers will be able to use the service for another 6 months.

In the same week, broadcast network vendor Crown Castle International decided to abandon its US mobile TV network (Modeo) having failed to secure operator support. This follows four years of development and testing in the New York area.
