On 16 June 2011 Everything Everywhere, O2 and Vodafone announced plans to create a mobile marketing and payment joint venture in the UK. The new entity will create a single payment platform that will allow people to pay for goods and services using a SIM-based electronic "wallet" on mobile phones equipped with near field communication (NFC) technology. An opt-in scheme will allow consumers to receive adverts and offers from advertisers.

The joint venture will be responsible for managing relationships between those involved in the project, including advertisers, financial institutions and retailers. Each operator will provide services directly to users. The three operators will split costs and own equal shares of the new entity. The joint venture aims to offer services by the end of 2011, subject to regulatory approval.
