TomTom Profit Warning Signals Tough Road Ahead for Navigation Device Makers

On 8 April 2008, leading navigation device company TomTom issued a trading update that indicated it will miss its financial targets for the first quarter of the year. It cited a dramatic reduction in retail inventory levels as the primary reason for the warning. TomTom said its revenue will be less than in 1Q07, with operating margins dropping to a "low single digit percentage". In recent quarters it has recorded double-digit margins.
