On 5 September 2011, Spanish network operator Telefónica announced a reorganisation. Its main telecommunications business will now fall into two blocks: Europe (including Spain) and Latin America; a new unit, Telefónica Digital, aims to "bolster Telefónica's place in the digital world and leverage any growth opportunities"; and a newly formed Global Resources division will manage procurement for the whole company.

Telefónica Digital will be led by Matthew Key, former head of Telefónica Europe. The unit will be based in London, with regional offices in Madrid, Sao Paolo and California. Responsibilities of the initial staff of 2,500 will include Internet service provider (ISP) and Web portal Terra, social network Tuenti and voice-over-IP (VoIP) provider Jajah, as well as R&D and media network activities.
