News:

T-Mobile UK has announced the support of HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access). The service will become live on August 1st 2006.

The company expects to have coverage of 65 percent of the UK delivering speeds of over 1 megabit per second.

T-Mobile indicated that the service will cost £17 per month with a “reasonable usage” volume set at 2 gigabytes although it should be noted that this is described as an “introductory offer.” (The current cost of it’s “web’n’walk professional” package using a 3G datacard is £19.99).

This is substantially cheaper than Vodafone’s pricing of £45 per month for a 1 gigabyte “reasonable usage” bundle (see CCS Insight Hotline 2006-25: Vodafone launches HSDPA in the UK using the “3G Broadband” brand).

In a related announcement the network introduced a £1 daily rate service for its prepaid customers which will also be available from August 1st 2006.
