Symbian announces its third quarter results and unveils a fourth R&D Centre in Beijing

Symbian has announced that 18.7 million smartphones using the Symbian operating system (OS) were shipped during the second quarter of 2007. This represents year on year growth of 52 percent. It takes total Symbian shipments in 1H07 to 34.6 million units compared to 24 million units in the corresponding period of 2006. Consequently, cumulative shipments of Symbian devices since the company was founded in 1998 now total in excess of 145 million units.

Reinforcing its mounting global success Symbian has also unveiled a new R&D centre in Beijing, China. The new presence compliments three existing R&D centres located in the UK and India. It will also contribute substantially to the future roadmap of the Symbian OS while extending the company’s ability to cater for local market requirements.
