On 27 January 2011, Sony Computer Entertainment announced PlayStation Suite and the latest PlayStation Portable (PSP) device, code-named NGP, or next-generation portable.
PlayStation Suite is a cross-platform runtime that aims to deliver the PlayStation experience on a wide range of devices and platforms. Availability will initially be limited to Android version 2.3 devices. Sony intends to launch the service by the end of 2011 starting with original PlayStation games. This will be expanded to new content and will be supported by PlayStation Store, an on-device portal for content and software downloads.
PlayStation Suite will also feature on Sony's NGP device. The NGP features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, five-inch OLED capacitive touch-screen display, rear multi-touch pad, GPS and front and rear cameras. The NGP will come in two variants: with Wi-Fi only or with Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. Sony has abandoned its UMD media format, opting for NVG, a new flash memory card system for game titles. The NGP will also support over-the-air downloads. Availability is scheduled for the end of 2011. No details on pricing were given.
