Sagem's future as an independent branded manufacturer increasingly unclear

Over the last two weeks Sagem has announced two deals which are likely to impact the future shape of the business.

On March 26th 2007 the French mobile phone manufacturer announced that it had entered a licensing and ODM (original design manufacturer) agreement with Sony Ericsson focused on entry level GSM, GPRS and EDGE mobile phones. The deal offers Sony Ericsson the ability to licence certain hardware and software technologies from Sagem. In the announcement it was also stated that Sagem “will provide Sony Ericsson with a number of Sony Ericsson branded mobile phones” and that the two companies “will conduct joint development activities.”

On April 5th 2007 Sagem announced a deal with Vodafone to produce a Vodafone-only branded mobile handset for sale across Vodafone markets. The handset, an extra slim GSM phone with a 65k colour display, is scheduled to be released by June 2007.
