SFR Sale Continues Vodafone's Refocus on Emerging Markets

On 3 April 2011, media conglomerate Vivendi announced it had agreed to pay €7.95 billion for Vodafone's 44 percent stake in French mobile network operator SFR. The move gives Vivendi total ownership of SFR. The deal, which has yet to be approved by regulators, is expected to close in the second quarter. Vodafone intends to return €4.5 billion of the net proceeds to shareholders through a share buy-back, and use the rest to reduce debt.
