On 31 August 2011, the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a civil antitrust lawsuit in the US District Court for the District of Columbia to block AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA. AT&T immediately issued a statement expressing its surprise and disappointment at the DOJ's action, and pledging a rigorous defence of its position in court.
AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA is subject to approval from the DOJ and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which regulate antitrust and public interest policy issues respectively.
