On September 10, 2008, Research In Motion (RIM) announced its BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220. The device is RIM's first clam-shell design. It has a qwerty keypad and internal QVGA screen as well as a smaller external display for previewing e-mails, messages and calls. The device also sports a two-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi support and a microSD slot. One day later at the CTIA event in San Francisco, RIM announced a series of deals related to applications and services across all BlackBerry devices, including:
- A MySpace for BlackBerry application and a MySpace Mobile experience customized for BlackBerry devices.
- An agreement with Microsoft to incorporate Live Search capabilities into the BlackBerry browser and BlackBerry Maps.
- A deal with AOL to offer AIM and ICQ instant messaging services as well as AOL Mail on BlackBerry devices.
- A variety of entertainment services that allow BlackBerry users to access content through TiVo digital video recorders. Initially this will be limited to viewing TV listings and remotely schedule recordings, but further applications are expected.
- Support for Slacker Personal Radio music discovery service in the US, and a deal with Ticketmaster that lets users browse, search and purchase tickets on BlackBerry devices.
