Over 20 million Symbian devices shipped in Q3 2007 as 15 new models start shipping

Symbian’s third quarter results revealed that device manufacturers using its mobile operating system (OS) shipped 20.4 million phones during the third quarter of 2007. This represents a year on year increase of 56 percent.

The company believes there are currently 134 different Symbian phones commercially available in the market with 15 new devices starting to ship during the quarter.

Eight licensees are producing devices based on the Symbian OS and the company announced that there are now over 8,000 third party applications available, an increase of 36 percent since the third quarter of 2006.

In related news, Symbian has extended its research and development resources in China through the acquisition of “personnel and technology” from Beijing based Genesis Interactive. This company is a leading developer of mobile applications for the Chinese market.
