Nortel's Woes Accentuate Investment Challenges for WiMAX

Nortel Networks filed for bankruptcy protection in Toronto and the US state of Delaware on 14 January 2009. The filing was followed on 29 January by Nortel's announcement that it was severing a joint strategic reseller agreement with Alvarion, first entered into in June 2008. Under the provisions of this agreement, Nortel had been reselling Alvarion's WiMAX access products while contributing resources to their development. Nortel attributed the decision to a need to narrow its product focus in the face of extreme business conditions.
