Nokia has announced that it intends to add support for Microsoft’s Silverlight on its S60, Series 40 and Internet tablet devices. Silverlight is a cross platform, cross browser plug-in that enables the creation of rich, interactive applications across multiple platforms and devices. It is regarded as a direct competitor to Adobe’s “Flash” technology. Silverlight is currently compatible with multiple browsers designed for Windows and Mac.
The move sees Silverlight diversifying onto mobile phones and will extend its reach to a large proportion of Nokia’s devices, expanding the opportunity for Silverlight developers. Availability will initially be limited to Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices with access scheduled for developers later in 2008 and full availability for licensees due “shortly thereafter”. The support of Silverlight on Series 40 and Internet Tablets will be confirmed at a later date.
