On 24 July 2008, Nokia and Qualcomm announced that they had entered into a new 15 year licensing agreement covering various standards including GSM, EDGE, CDMA, WCDMA, HSDPA, orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE). The agreement provides a settlement of all litigation between the two companies, including the withdrawal by Nokia of its complaint to the European Commission.
The financial structure of the settlement includes an up-front payment and on-going royalties payable by Nokia to Qualcomm. Nokia has also agreed to assign ownership of a number of patents to Qualcomm, including patents declared as essential to GSM, WCDMA and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing access (OFDMA).
