Nokia Buys Symbian to Create Open-Source Foundation for Its Software

On 24 June 2008, Nokia announced it would buy the 51.2 percent of Symbian shares it does not already hold, at a cost of €264 million ($411 million). Nokia also announced it intends to use the purchase to create the Symbian Foundation, a non-profit organisation that will provide a unified, royalty-free open-source software platform for mobile phones. The platform will be based on the Symbian operating system, plus Nokia's S60 platform and selected elements from the UIQ and MOAP platforms. The Symbian Foundation is expected to start operations in the first half of 2009.
