On 8 November 2010 the board of the Symbian Foundation announced a shift in the role of the non-profit organisation. The foundation will no longer manage the open sourcing of the Symbian platform but will become a legal entity responsible for licensing Symbian software and other intellectual property. Nokia has assumed responsibility for the direction and output of the platform, and will make future Symbian releases available through an "alternative direct and open model". It has not given details of how this alternative will differ from the Eclipse Public License (EPL) currently used by the foundation. Existing Symbian^3 code will continue to be available under EPL terms.
