New Devices and Services Will Make Nokia Even Stronger in Emerging Markets

News

On 4 November 2008 at an event in New Delhi, India, Nokia announced a range of new products and services for emerging markets. It presented seven new phones — the 1202, 1661, 2320 classic, 2323 classic, 2330 classic, 5130 XpressMusic and 7100 Supernova. Prices before tax and subsidy range from €25 for the 1202 to €90 for the 5130 XpressMusic.

Nokia also announced a range of services designed specifically for emerging markets to complement the new product portfolio. Mail on Ovi is a "free" e-mail service for all Series 40 handsets. A trial of the service will begin in select markets at the end of November 2008 and a global rollout is expected by the end of the year. Nokia also presented Nokia Life Tools. The service is designed for students and farmers in rural and small-town communities and provides SMS-based information on education and agriculture. Nokia will conduct a limited pilot in India by the end of 2008 before extending it to the rest of the country in the first half of 2009 with the 2323 and 2330 classic phones. The service will then be expanded across selected countries in Asia and Africa later in 2009.
