Motorola has announced its intention to acquire Symbol Technologies for $3.9 billion. It has been negotiating for nearly a year to close the deal.
Symbol is a leading player in rugged mobile devices, bar code readers and end to end solutions designed specifically for vertical applications such as retail, travel, transportation, manufacturing, distribution and healthcare.
Symbol also has expertise in RFID (radio frequency identification) - a technology that allows products to be tagged (like a bar code) but rather than requiring line of sight to a scanner RFID tags can be embedded in products or packaging and read wirelessly.
