Motorola and Intel have invested in Wireless broadband provider Clearwire Corporate. Clearwire was set up by Craig McCaw who founded McCaw Cellular which was later purchased by AT&T Wireless. It currently offers wireless broadband services in over 200 cities and towns in the USA, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Mexico. Clearwire had previously planned to make an IPO (initial public offering) which it has now abandoned.
The announcement is part of a $900 million deal that sees Intel making its largest ever investment of $600m and Motorola buying Clearwire’s subsidiary NextNet Wireless which provided OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation) based wireless broadband infrastructure equipment. Motorola will also supply wireless broadband equipment for Clearwire’s existing and future networks globally.
The companies stated that the investment is to help accelerate the development and deployment of WiMAX networks based on the 802.16e standard. Clearwire is currently migrating its networks to WiMAX technology.
