On 11 February 2010 Motorola announced that it had set a target of the first quarter of 2011 for its long-planned separation. The company will be split into two distinct, publicly traded entities. One will encompass the mobile device and home businesses, and will be led by Sanjay Jha. The other will focus on enterprise mobility solutions and networks, with Greg Brown at the helm.

The separation will take effect through a stock dividend of shares to Motorola shareholders. Both entities will continue to use the Motorola brand with ownership likely to revert to the mobile devices and home business. The brand will then be licensed on a royalty-free basis to the enterprise mobility solution and network business.
