Summary
Mobile instant messaging (IM) services are growing in popularity. RIM's BlackBerry Messenger has seen a huge increase in usage and is currently the subject of a high-profile worldwide marketing campaign, while Microsoft has revamped its Windows Live Messenger offering and generated over 1 million downloads of its iPhone IM app. Mobile IM holds promise as another way for phone-makers, network operators and service providers to retain customers and drive up mobile data usage. However, the field is fragmented, and companies involved in mobile IM must remember that many users have multiple IM accounts. We believe the development of "socially connected" address books will help broaden mobile IM's appeal.
