Making Network Investments for an Uncertain Future

The world heads into 2012 facing higher levels of economic uncertainty than at any time arguably since the 1930s and the banking crisis of 2008. Yet this is also the time when mobile network operators need to boost their levels of innovation to realise the full potential of the smartphone and tablet markets, and to build new sources of income to offset falling revenue from voice services. In addition, they are called upon to run sustained investment levels to build out 3G coverage and roll out 4G networks.

We examine the tensions involved and highlight some of the potential traps the mobile industry faces.
