On 3 June 2010, ARM, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, ST-Ericsson and Texas Instruments jointly announced the formation of an independent not-for-profit software engineering organisation called Linaro. The organisation aims to foster the development of devices running open-source Linux-based operating systems on ARM Cortex-A processors.
Linaro plans to release validated lower-layer code and tools every six months, with the first "production worthy optimized release" due in November 2010. All code developed under Linaro will be made available under Open Source Initiative licensing terms. Releases will be accompanied by "low cost" board support packages (BSPs).
Canonical will serve as Linaro's engineering partner. Canonical is the primary backer of the Ubuntu Linux distribution, though the Linaro partnership will apply Canonical's expertise in systems integration and the management of code releases across multiple Linux distributions.
