LTE Delays Endanger UK's Reputation as Centre of Mobile Innovation

On 16 November 2010 at the FT World Telecoms Conference, Ed Richards, chief executive of UK telecom regulator Ofcom, outlined his organisation's draft timetable for the auction of spectrum earmarked for next-generation services such as Long Term Evolution (LTE). He stated that parliamentary approval of draft legislation is imminent. This will be followed by a period of consultation between February and May 2011. Ofcom believes bidding will commence during the first quarter of 2012 and licences will be awarded by the end of the second quarter of that year. Spectrum will be made available by the beginning of 2013, with licensees expected to launch networks a year later.
