As interest in on-board GPS (Global Positioning System) grows UK based Bluetooth manufacturer CSR has acquired two companies focused on location-based technologies, NordNav and Cambridge Positioning Systems (CPS).
NordNav has a software-based GPS solution that uses the processing power of existing hardware in a device to calculate positioning data. CPS has a product called Enhanced GPS (E-GPS) which helps to provide faster “time to fix” when initially fixing a location. E-GPS also offers location data when out of the line of sight of the GPS satellites by synchronizing with a wireless network.
CSR believes that adding GPS to Bluetooth chips could cost as little as $1 compared to $5 to $10 for a separate GPS chipset solution.
