On 19 September 2011 Google announced in a blog posting the commercial availability of its Google Wallet payment service. Google Wallet is the first mobile handset payment service in the US that uses near field communication (NFC) technology. The launch follows earlier trials of the service in New York and San Francisco. A Google Wallet application is currently available only on the Sprint Nexus S 4G through an over-the-air update. Users can "tap and pay" with funds from a Citi MasterCard credit card or from a Google Prepaid Card. Visa, American Express and Discover were also announced as credit card partners of Google Wallet.
