Free Shakes Up French Market as Established Operators Stumble
Free Mobile launched as France's fourth mobile network on 10 January 2012. It introduced two very competitive tariffs that significantly undercut established rivals. Its flagship tariff, at €19.99 a month, offers unlimited domestic and international calls to 40 countries, free SMS and 3GB of data. The other tariff, at €2 a month, comes with 60 minutes of calls and 60 text messages. Both tariffs have no minimum term.
By the end of 1Q12, Free Mobile had exceeded 2.6 million subscribers and recorded mobile service revenue of €86 million. The operator reported that customers were split about evenly between its two tariff plans.
