On 18 April 2011, Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom announced the formation of a 50/50 joint venture to procure telecom equipment. It is the latest in a series of moves that has seen the two companies form closer ties over the past few years.
The deal is also the next stage of a partnership announced in February 2011 to explore potential areas of cooperation in a defined set of technology fields. The companies estimate combined annual global savings of €1.3 billion after three years in customer equipment, network equipment, service platforms and IT infrastructure. The jointly owned and operated entity, which is still subject to board approval from both companies as well as antitrust clearance, is expected to be established in the fourth quarter of 2011 and will have offices in Paris and Bonn.
