CCS Insight attended the annual CTIA Wireless IT and Entertainment conference that concluded on 9 October in San Diego. The show has historically been modest in terms of its floor space and the number of announcements. This year was no exception, though activity appeared high, in line with the industry's general good health in a recessionary economy.
There were few major announcements made at the show. But the juxtaposition of US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Julius Genachowski as opening keynote speaker followed by AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets CEO Ralph De La Vega set the show's tone, prompting several announcements highlighting the complex and occasionally contentious dialogue between the relatively new regulator and US carriers.
Mr Genachowski's keynote focused primarily on spectrum policy while offering a pledge of assistance on the siting of base-station towers. AT&T's De La Vega offered a strenuous defence of the US mobile sector's competitiveness and economic value.
