Summary

The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas on 6 to 9 January, 2011. Over 140,000 attendees came to see more than 2,700 companies show off the latest devices and services.

CCS Insight identified several key themes at the show. Foremost among these were tablets, but other important developments included Verizon's clear commitment to Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, the proliferation of 3D as the next big thing in all consumer electronics categories and the inception of dual-core application processors in mobile devices (smartphones and tablets), which is currently being spearheaded by Nvidia's Tegra 2 chip. A worrying development for all manufacturers at the show was the accelerating homogenisation of mobile devices.
