News:

Telecoms commissioner, Viviane Reding, has officially adopted DVB-H as the common standard for the transmission of mobile TV services in the European Union (EU). The move to encourage member states to adopt DVB-H over alternative technologies such as MediaFLO, DMB and DAB-IP follows a speech made at Cebit in March 2007 warning of market fragmentation and revealing the EU’s preference for DVB-H (see CCS Insight Hotline 2007-12: European Commission throws weight behind DVB-H as mobile debate continues).

DVB-H will be added to a list of standards published in the EU’s official journal. Although this latest development doesn’t mandate the use of DVB-H over alternative technologies, Ms Reding emphasised such a step maybe taken in 2008 following further consultation.
