European Commission efforts to enforce roaming cost reductions in final stages

News:

Following a two day summit of the European Union (EU) national heads of state and government it has been agreed that “every effort should be made to successfully conclude the legislative process on the reduction of roaming tariffs by the end of the first half of 2007.”

This endorses the ongoing efforts by Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding to get roaming costs dramatically reduced across the EU.

Most network operators have responded to this pressure by lowering their voice roaming charges or implementing roaming tariff packages for their users. Notably this downwards price pressure has extended to mobile data roaming charges. Vodafone has recently announced plans to reduce data roaming charges to a flat rate fee of €12 euros per month from July 2007. At present these price changes seem unlikely to deter the European Commission from imposing legislative reductions in roaming costs.
