Early signs of success for Mobile TV in Italy

3 Italia has announced that it has signed up 111,000 users for its mobile TV service in the first 6 weeks of operation according to a report in the International Herald Tribune. The service was launched on June 5th 2006 to coincide with the start of the Football World Cup.

The CEO of 3 Italia expressed his surprise announcing that he "didn't expect the numbers to be this high" adding that 3 Italia was seeing continued growth even after the World Cup ended.

3 Italia has a target of 500,000 users by the end of 2006. Its network is believed to cover 2,000 of Italy's biggest cities with approximately 1,000 transmitters. The cost of the service is €3 per day with further discounts if purchased on a weekly (€12) or monthly (€29) basis. It currently provides access to nine channels expanding to 20 by the end of the year.
