Summary
The past 12 months have seen operators in the UK revise previously "unlimited" data tariffs and introduce tiered plans based on fixed amounts of traffic, usually 500MB, 750MB and 1GB. This shift away from unlimited tariffs demonstrates a growing need to accommodate data on mobile networks and to encourage clearer charges for consumers. As the number of smartphones rises, including those in low-cost segments, all operators need to anticipate growing data usage. The trend provides an opportunity to exploit data access as voice and text services become commoditised.
