Carphone Warehouse acquires AOL UK and announces strong connection growth

Carphone Warehouse (CPW) has announced it has agreed to buy Time Warner’s AOL UK Internet business. The business has two million customers of which 1.4 million are broadband subcribers and 600,000 use dial up services. With the addition of these customers CPW becomes the third biggest broadband supplier in the UK.
In a parallel announcement CPW announced that it saw a 34 percent increase in mobile phone connections during the second quarter of 2006 giving a total of 2.38 million connections. It also saw unprecedented demand for its Talk Talk service which offers consumers “free” broadband. In the second quarter it had 625,000 applications for the service.
