On 3 August, Research In Motion (RIM) unveiled the latest version of its operating system, BlackBerry OS 6, at a joint media event with AT&T Mobility. BlackBerry OS 6 is a substantial upgrade from previous versions and makes extensive use of assets gained from RIM's acquisition of Torch Mobile in August 2009.

The event also featured the exclusive launch with AT&T of the Torch 9800, the first device to use BlackBerry OS 6. The Torch 9800 is RIM's first slider qwerty device with a 3.2-inch screen. The glass display has a resolution of 480 by 360 pixels with capacitive multi-touch capability. The device weighs 161 g and is 14.6 mm thick. It supports quad-band GSM, GPRS and EDGE and tri-band WCDMA. Key features include a five-megapixel camera with flash, image stabilisation, face detection, zero shutter lag and geotagging. Other specifications include a 624 MHz processor, GPS and 802.11 b, g and n WLAN supporting Unlicensed Mobile Access.

The new operating system will also be made available to Bold 9650, Bold 9700 and Pearl 3G devices. The Torch 9800 will be available from 12 August through AT&T for $199 with a two-year contract. AT&T will retain US exclusivity for an undisclosed period. Worldwide roll-out is slated for September.
