BT has announced that it is working with twelve local councils in the UK to deploy municipal Wi-Fi networks. The size and coverage of the networks and how they will be used and funded has not yet been finalised.
Similar schemes have been proliferating in the USA - most notably a plan by Google to offer free metropolitan Wi-Fi access in San Francisco. One significant difference to the US roll out is that access to the BT networks will not be free.
