On 28 July 2011, the BBC announced the launch of a new iPlayer app for iPad. The app will allow viewers in 11 European countries to watch a range of BBC material for a monthly fee of €6.99 or an annual subscription of €49.99. Initially available in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, the app will be rolled out to Australia, Canada and the US later in 2011. The BBC has said that at least 1,500 hours of content is available for global iPlayer viewers and it plans to add more than 100 hours a month. Programmes can be accessed over 3G or Wi-Fi connections, and the app allows viewers to stream content or download it for offline viewing.
