Arrival of Netflix in UK Will Push Up the Cost of Video Rights

On 9 January 2012, Netflix announced the launch of its subscription streaming video-on-demand service in the UK and Ireland. It costs £5.99 a month in the UK and €6.99 in Ireland; the company is offering a month's free trial. The service supports a range of devices, including Internet-enabled TVs, game consoles, Blu-ray players, tablets and mobile phones.

At launch, the catalogue consists of titles from 15 sources: All3Media, the BBC, CBS, Channel 4's 4oD, Disney UK and Ireland, ITV, Lionsgate UK, MGM, Miramax, Momentum Pictures, NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox and Viacom International Media Networks.
