Apple unveils iPhone after months of speculation

The long anticipated Apple iPhone was announced by CEO Steve Jobs to a frenzied audience at the Macworld conference in San Francisco.

The device has the following specifications:

  • GSM Quad band phone supporting EDGE
  • Bluetooth 2.0 and WiFi (802.11 b/g)
  • Apple OS X operating system (likely to be a cut down version of OS 10)
  • 2 mega pixel camera
  • Safari web browser
  • 3.5 inch touch sensitive widescreen display (320 x 480)
  • Patented “multi-touch” input using fingers
  • Built in rechargeable, non-removable battery
    (Apple claims 5 hours talk-time and 16 hours of audio playback)
  • Optimized applications from Google and Yahoo! (e.g. mapping and email)
  • 3 sensors (Proximity / Ambient Light / Accelerometer)
  • The device will be available to two versions: 4GB ($499) and 8GB ($599)
