Apple announces initial Euro iPhone partnerships with O2 UK and T-Mobile Germany

News:

Apple has reached exclusive multi-year agreements with O2 UK and T-Mobile Germany to sell its iPhone. These were announced at press conferences hosted by Steve Jobs.

The device is identical to the product that has been available in the USA since June 29th (see CCS Insight Hotline 2007-28: Apple iPhone Review). It will go on sale with the respective European operator partners on 9th November 2007 at a price of £269 in the UK and €399 in Germany. Both prices are inclusive of VAT (value-added [sales] tax).

UK customers will be required to commit to an 18 month contract at £35, £45 or £55. In Germany the contract period will be two years. O2’s tariff includes unlimited mobile data usage via its cellular network and 7,500 WiFi hotspots available through an agreement with UK WiFi operator “The Cloud”. T-Mobile will offer users access via its GSM / EDGE network and its own Hotspots (currently 8,600 in Germany).

Both operators have implemented Apple’s “visual voicemail” solution within their networks and have been rolling out support for EDGE over the last few months. T-Mobile expects to have 100 percent EDGE coverage by the end of 2007 while O2’s network is approximately 30 percent EDGE enabled at present.
