On 17 March 2009 Apple provided a preview of an updated operating system for its iPhone platform. The new release will be known as OS 3.0. As part of the announcement it released a beta version of the new platform and an updated software development kit. The updated platform includes over 1,000 new application programming interfaces (APIs) and more than 100 new features. Apple also announced additional functions to support its App Store, notably support for "in app" purchases. The new iPhone OS 3.0 will be available "this summer" as a free update to all iPhone customers. It will be available for the iPod touch at a cost of $9.95. Some features will not be available on early iPhone and iPod touch devices.
