Mobile operator 3 and Skype (owned by online auction company eBay) have partnered to launch a new 3G handset that will provide access to Skype’s voice over IP (VoIP) services. The phone enables customers to make free Skype calls and use the Skype instant messaging (IM) service between Skype service users. It also allows users to make standard calls using the cellular network and enables access to the full range of 3 services commonly available on all its phones. Access to “Skype Out” is not enabled on the handset.
The phone was jointly developed by Skype and 3 in partnership with Qualcomm. It uses Qualcomm’s BREW platform and iSkoot software to power the Skype service. The phone is manufactured by Chinese company Amoi and features a 2 mega pixel camera, Bluetooth, MicroSD card support and an MP3 player. It weights 86 grams and has a 262k colour display.
The 3 Skypephone will be available in 2007 in the UK, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Ireland, Macau and Sweden. In the UK, the handset will be available from the 3 website or retail stores from 2nd November 2007 at a price of £49.99 on prepay or free on a 3 contract. Skype services remain free to prepay subscribers if they make a £10 “top up” per month.
